Predator vs Comanche: Why the Comanche?

I think when the show runners for Prey got together they wanted to find the human equivalent to the alien hunter race of Predators. There were probably a few suggestions tossed around in the writing room, like Spartans, Carthaginians, Gauls, Huns, and even Romans. It comes as no surprise that they eventually landed on the Comanche.

Who are the Comanche? The Comanches were similar to the Predators in that they were a war-faring people, as well as master hunters. Their incredible military competence, which for the Comanche was derived from the horse, made them an absolute force of nature.

Not only were the Comanche experts of War, but they were also some of the best hunters this world has ever seen. The skill the Comanche exhibited when hunting wild buffalo is nothing less than extraordinary. The Comanche’s ability to fight was unparalleled for a long time making them an attractive option to pit against the Predator.

With all that being said, the Comanche in the 1700’s were feared by many.

How feared were the Comanche?

Let me preface this, I am absolutely fascinated with history. I took Indigenous American Studies in school to get a better understanding of the overall history of America. Growing up near the Seneca Nation, I was incredibly interested in their rich history, as well as culture and I needed to learn more.

After all how can you know where you’re going, if you don’t know where you’ve been. That being said, where we all have been, is typically a dark and violent place, as far as history is concerned.

I’m Italian and Irish. The Ancient Celts tortured, raped, and pillaged. It wasn’t all fairies and leprechauns. The Romans conquered and took slaves to fight in the arena as Gladiators for sport, they also tortured, raped, and pillaged. Mostly every race has some crazy dark history.

The Comanche are no exception to this rule, they also raped, tortured and pillaged. For the European settlers during the 1700’s, coming face to face with the Comanche was like a window into their own past and this made them fearful of the Comanche.

Who are the Comanche during Prey?

The Comanches were a strong people, who battled all over the Southern Plains and nearly exterminated the Apache. Similar to the Spartans they were trained at a young age to hunt and what separated the Comanche from many tribes was their exceptional horse riding abilities. When the Comanche became teenagers they learned to fight.

No wonder the Predators in the new Hulu movie Prey decided to battle against the Comanche, they certainly enjoy a good challenge.

“If you go back through Comanche history, you see that they were the ones who stopped the Spanish from coming North,” he explains. “Why did the French stop coming west from Louisiana? Comanches. … Here was why the West Coast and the East Coast settled before the middle of the country. Here was why there was basically a 40-year wait before you could develop the state of Texas or before other Plain states could be developed.”

What is the Setting for Prey?

The Hulu movie Prey takes place in the year 1719 and is the fifth installment in the Predator franchise. Prey is also the first prequel in the series. Every Predator telling we’ve gotten thus far has taken place in a somewhat modern time period and pitted the Predator against modern-day soldiers or fighters.

Director Dan Trachtenberg’s Prey takes place in the great plains of the Comanche Nation and I for one am here for it. Can’t wait. Sign me up.

Who is the Lead Actress of Prey?

The actress who played Kerry Loudermilk on FX’s Legion, Amber Midthunder, is the main actress in Hulu’s Prey.

Amber Midthunder is a real-life Sioux actor who will be portraying Naru, a young Comanche Warrior during the 18th-Century. She will have the tall task of protecting her Comanche brethren from the alien hunter known as the “Predator”.

Something to note is the Comanche did not allow female warriors. So this is a Hollywood spin but I am excited to see Amber in the role and her story play out.

Hopefully the Directors of Prey try to be as historically accurate to the Comanche as possible outside of that small change.
