Discover the Ultimate Top 5 Best Pilots in Star Wars
There have been many great pilots in the Star Wars universe, but only a select few can be called the best. In this blog post, we will discuss the top 5 best pilots in Star Wars history. These are the pilots who have demonstrated their skills time and time again on the battlefield, and who continue to inspire us with their courage and heroism. So without further ado, let’s get started!
#5 Luke Skywalker: First Death Star
Star Wars has had many space battles, none more iconic than the battle above the Death Star in A New Hope. And while there were many great pilots involved in that battle, it was Luke Skywalker who played the pivotal role. Skywalker was able to destroy the Death Star by using the Force to guide his shot.
Sure he had Obi-Wan Kenobi guiding him to trust the force, but it was ultimately Luke’s skills as a pilot that allowed him to make the shot. And for that, he earns a spot on our list
Luke Skywalker might not be the most skilled pilot in a dog fight, but his use of the Force makes him a dangerous opponent.
Something I personally wished to have seen more of was Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker in the cockpit. We were able to see his father Anakin Skywalker, during Revenge of the Sith use his full Jedi Knight abilities. Perhaps Luke would have been higher up on this list if we saw him piloting his X-Wing more during Return of the Jedi.
#4 Poe Dameron: Hero of the Resistance
Say what you want about the Sequel Trilogy, but one thing that it got right was Poe Dameron. Poe is an exceptional pilot who we first met in the Force Awakens. Dameron has repeatedly shown his skills in both combat and piloting. He was able to destroy Starkiller Base, and later took out a First Order Dreadnought single-handedly.
His hotheadedness gets him into trouble at times, but his skill as a pilot is undeniable. Poe is one of the best pilots in the Star Wars universe.
Poe Dameron is a hot-shot pilot who always manages to come out on top.
If I ever found myself in a space battle, or up against a Star Destroyer, I would want Poe Dameron by my side.
#3 Han Solo & Chewbacca: Dysfunctional Dynamic Duo
The duo of Han Solo and Chewbacca has been a fan favorite in the Star Wars franchise since they first appeared on the big screen. These two have been through a lot together, and their piloting skills are second to none (accept the two individuals we rank higher on this list).
Han Solo and Chewbacca are the perfect team, and their skills in the cockpit are a big part of that. The Millennium Falcon is one of the most iconic ships in all of Star Wars, and these two are the perfect team to fly it.
Never forget that the dynamic duo of Han Solo and Chewbacca were able to get the best of Darth Vader himself. This allowed Luke to destroy the first Death Star.
During Empire Strikes Back, Han and Chewbacca navigated an asteroid field together, now that’s teamwork. I really couldn’t put one on this list without the other and perhaps that is why they came in third.
#2 Hera Syndulla: Heart of the Ghost
Probably the most underrated character on our 5 Best Pilots in Star Wars History list is Hera Syndulla. Hera is the leader of the Ghost crew in Star Wars Rebels, and she is an exceptional pilot. She has flown in some of the most dangerous battles in the Star Wars universe.
Vastly underrated, Hera Syndulla is one of the best pilots in Star Wars. She is crucial to the overall Star Wars story and arguably the best star pilot around.
I would say Hera is a perfect blending of Han Solo and Poe Dameron. Her ability to command a crew and pilot solo hasn’t been matched in any of the Star Wars movies.
“Hera first honed her skills as a rebel pilot during a relief mission to Ryloth following the failed assassination attempt on the Emperor and Lord Vader. She was able to fly various ships including the Ghost, the Phantom, a prototype B-wing starfighter, and a T-65B X-wing starfighter.”
Other pilots on this list only flew one or two different starships, Hera is one of the only Star Wars pilots familiar with many different vessels.
#1 Anakin Skywalker: The Chosen One
Ah yes, Anakin Skywalker, the force sensitive fighter pilot who became the best pilot in the galaxy. Jedi Knight (never a Jedi Master), Anakin Skywalker was the chosen one according to the Jedi Council. He was able to fly any type of ship and was a master of combat flying.
Anakin’s piloting skills were on full display during the Clone Wars. He was able to fly his Jedi starfighter in some of the most dangerous battles and always came out on top. If you watched the Clone Wars animated series there would be little doubt in your mind who truly is the best pilot in the galaxy.
Skywalker’s skills as a pilot are unmatched in the Star Wars universe. He is the best pilot of all time and it’s not even close.
Even from a young age we got to see Anakin’s skills as a pilot. He was able to fly podracers and even won the Boonta Eve Classic, due in large part to his force sensitivity. Also, Anakin’s piloting skills were on full display when he destroyed the Trade Federation ship during the Phantom Menace.
After Anakin Skywalker made his turn and became Darth Vader, he was still thought to be one of the best pilots in the galaxy. He was able to fly TIE fighters with precision and skill.
Top 5 Best Pilots In Star Wars History: Honorable Mentions
There are plenty of other great pilots in the Star Wars Universe besides the ones already mentioned. Here are a few more that deserve honorable mention.
The hero of the second Death Star and original owner of the Millenium Falcon. Lando became a General Calrissian for his efforts in helping the Rebel Alliance.
I must confess, Wedge Antilles probably deserved to be higher on this list if we factored in Legends material, but we didn’t. Wedge certainly was one of the great pilots in Star Wars. We got to see him take flight during the Rebels animated series and he did help destroy the second Death Star with Lando. I just wanted to see a bit more on screen from Wedge Antilles.
Watching Din Djarin take flight on the Mandalorian Disney+ series is a lot of fun. Din is certainly one of the most skilled pilots in the Galaxy but I would say he is more entertaining than masterful.
Watching Rey take the reigns of the Millenium Falcon in the Force Awakens was one of the best chase sequences in all of Star Wars. It would have been great to see her do more in a cockpit throughout the sequel trilogy.
Plo Koon was compared to Anakin Skywalker for his piloting abilities during the Clone Wars. Jedi Master and member of the Jedi Order, Plo Koon is a better pilot than most.
Thane Kyrell and Ciena Ree
If you haven’t read Lost Stars by Claudia Grey you’re missing out.
Thane Kyrell and Ciena Ree have one of the best stories (if not THE best) in all of Star Wars. Their story spans from the prequel trilogy to the sequel trilogy. A budding romance torn apart by different ideologies. This is a MUST read for any true Star Wars fan.
Did you ever wonder about that Star Destroyer Rey was scavenging when we first meet her in the Force Awakens and how it got there? Have you ever been curious about the actual Battle of Jakku? Well look no further than Lost Stars.
This is arguably my favorite book and if you read it you’ll agree that Thane Kyrell and Ciena Ree deserve to be mentioned on this list.
Kenobi didn’t enjoy flying but he was very good at it. Obi-Wan was able to fly anything and was always able to get himself and his friends out of danger. Using his force abilities he was a very good pilot.
