Digimon and Pokemon are both mainstream anime shows that a great majority of children have watched or will watch. When asking an avid Digimon fan and an avid Pokemon fan, the answer is always “That show was better than the other”, and we’re here to settle that debate.

Pokemon was first out of the gate in the year 1996, while Digimon didn’t come into fruition until 1997. The reason Pokemon became more popular is because of the fact that it was first, but Digimon came later and is more mature. Both anime have their own set of pros and cons but Digimon has better stories, characters, graphics/animation, and opportunities for creativity.

Sure this is entirely my own opinion, but you would be remiss to think I am the only one who thinks this way.

Digimon has more interesting characters and storylines. Take season one for example. In the first season of Digimon, we were introduced to Tai and his best friend Matt. We met Sora and Izzy later on in the series as it progressed the friendships and the dynamics of the characters were something that kept audiences watching. The season finale left fans on a crazy cliffhanger with our main character Tai having his Digimon evolve to an unexpected level.

Pokemon is more repetitive, having the same formula of different Pokemon being caught, Ash winning all the badges, and Team battling their way to the top. It’s like a never-ending cycle of repetitive episodes and more often than not, it is predictable.

Pokemon’s first season was about Ash (Red) and his quest to become a Pokemon master

What makes any show great is the characters involved.

Both shows have common concepts such as collecting monsters, beating the bad guy, and being a hero. However, Digimon has better characters that have more depth and development while Pokemon uses the same formula over and over again.

This is one of the biggest factors in determining which show is better – if you love Digimon’s character development then it might be slightly better because you get attached to the characters more.

Digimon has more interesting characters and storylines

Digimon vs Pokemon when it comes to characters is not the only reason that Digimon is better. The storyline is also one of its biggest strengths, Digimon is able to build on relationships and how characters interact with each other without having to rely on what they do for a living.

Pokemon has gym badges, an elite 4 or leader (depending on if it’s Orange or Johto), and a champion whereas Digimon takes time to develop the characters and how they react to their surroundings. Pokemon is about collecting while Digimon is about friendship and growing up.

This is a huge difference between the two anime shows – it will determine if you prefer an anime show that has more “collecting”, or what we call in real life, tangible goals.

The graphics and animation are better in Digimon

The animation in Digimon is superior to that of Pokemon. The colors are brighter, the art is crisper, and storylines are better written. They are both great in their own way but Pokemon’s animation has definitely improved over the years whereas Digimon is rapidly growing its viewer base.

Digimon also possesses a certain “magic” that you can’t find in Pokemon – it’s what keeps fans coming back after all these years. The art and color are much improved and the sequences and fight scenes are well thought out.

We have all seen a Pokemon fight scene, cut and paste, easy to follow, basic. On the other hand, Digimon can have fight scenes that are more complex instead of having them be something repetitive.

There are more opportunities for creativity in the world of Digimon

Is Digimon better than Pokemon?

There are more opportunities for creativity in the world of Digimon because you are not pigeon held to the same storyline as the Pokemon anime that is merely a replication of itself.

In Pokemon, it’s always about catching monsters and being the best whereas, in Digimon the threat changes, and the stakes are real. The fate of the digital world and the real world is in the hands of children and teenagers. Pokemon on the other hand is still the same story, with different monsters. The only thing you can risk in Pokemon is fainting, you could lose your life in Digimon.

Pokemon is too formulaic – it’s always the same thing

Is Digimon better than Pokemon?

Pokemon is too formulaic – it’s always the same thing with the same characters as if no time has passed at all. The only real change is that Ash’s Pikachu seems to have a different voice actor every few years or so. Digimon has evolved into something bigger and better over the past years, it just keeps getting better.

Pokemon is too dependent on rehashing the same story and selling us the same video game each year in a different color.

Digimon evolves, takes chances, and tries to grow its storyline and characters. It isn’t afraid of trying something new or different whereas Pokemon is content with staying the same and rehashing the same storyline over and over again.

Fans of both shows can agree that they are both great in their own way

Is Digimon better than Pokemon?

Fans of both shows can agree that they are both great in their own way, they are also different. One is about catching monsters, the other about developing friendships with them, and the other Digi-Destined.

Pokemon has mastered the art of marketing and merchandise. It taps into each child’s wish to own something rare, different, and exotic. Whereas Digimon does some of that but the focus is on storytelling and developing characters.

Final Verdict:

Digimon is better than Pokemon

In conclusion, Pokemon is what it is but Digimon grows with each new generation that watches it. If you enjoy catching as many creatures as you can, as fast as you can, then Pokemon will be the choice for you. On the other hand, if you enjoy watching a show that is about relationships, friendship, and the love of digital monsters in an anime world then Digimon will be what you are looking for.
