Scott Snyder and IDW team for Dark Spaces: Wildfire

Something Explosive is releasing this month from IDW with Dark Spaces: Wildfire by Scott Snyder. Wildfire is the first issue in the San Diego publisher’s new original content anthology. Snyder and Hayden Sherman tell the story of an all female inmate firefighting brigade as they battle the Arroyo Wildfire. Wildfire is a “Heist” story against the backdrop of a natural disaster but it is so much more!

Dark Spaces: Wildfire is releasing monthly starting in July and is a stand alone story in the Dark Spaces Universe. Wildfire will have many cover variants available from artists such as Andrea Sorrentino, Liana Kangas, and Tula Lotay. The plan is for a connected Anthology of Dark Spaces stories in 2023. Snyder will be in charge of building the Dark Spaces line of books at IDW with a hand-picked creative team. Judging from Issue #1 – Wildfire is a PERFECT introduction to the Wild Fire Anthology series!

Everything you need to know about Wildfire from IDW & Scott Snyder

Here’s the IDW Publishing pitch and synopsis for the Dark Spaces: Wildfire series:

DARK SPACES PITCH:

“Desperate people, desperate situations. In Dark Spaces, Snyder explores the decisions made—and irreversible actions are taken—when the walls are closing in, when knuckles are white and teeth are bared. Each character-driven entry in the Dark Spaces series is a fully contained, standalone story featuring a different up-and-coming artist, handpicked by the acclaimed author himself. Further championing the new generation of comic creators, Snyder will curate future projects fitting the Dark Spaces theme from promising young writers.”

WILDFIRE SYNOPSIS:

“Six weeks into the slow burn of the historic Arroyo Fire, a crew of women from an inmate firefighting program risking everything on the frontlines when their newest recruit – a white-collar convict with a deep network of shady dealers – discovers they’re mere miles from her crooked former associate’s mansion. When she proposes a plan to abandon their duties and hunt for riches under cover of smoke and ash, the team must decide if they’re ready to jeopardize their one sure path back to normalcy for a shot at a score that would change their lives… But is this a flicker of fortune or a deadly trap? Scott Snyder and breakout artist Hayden Sherman craft an unforgettable heist for a new age in Dark Spaces: Wildfire.”

Advanced Review of IDW Publishing Comic – Wildfire

Nerd Night News managed to get our hands on an advanced copy of Dark Spaces: Wildfire #1 . In a single sentence – we were absolutely blown away. NO SPOILERS so feel free to keep reading with confidence.

Snyder proves once again why he is one of the top writers in the medium. Pacing, character development, and intrigue drip from the pages. This leads to the final few pages of Issue 1 being THAT MUCH MORE impactful.

Wildfire is beautiful and brings a layer of depth to an already tense story. Illustrated by Hayden Sherman with colors by Ronda Pattison, and letters by Deron Bennett the aesthetics of Wildfire are truly stellar. The artwork is impressive in Wildfire and draws the reader further into the perilous setting. SO STUNNING!

The entire creative team does an impressive job of laying out the story quickly without feeling contrived or “paint by numbers”. Interwoven into the excitement of ‘Crew 513’ fighting the Arroyo Wildfire we get a glimpse of who the cast of characters are. This feels natural and not just like an exposition dump. Overall Wildfire sets the tone for not only this tale but the Dark Spaces Universe. It is easy to see a natural transition to Netflix or the big screen SOON. VERY SMOOTH STORYTELLING!

The dialogue is natural and believable. The issue builds from a steady smolder to an absolute explosion and a cliffhanger that will most certainly lead to a “Damned if you do – Damned if you don’t – scenario in issue 2.
