Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 Official, Details Emerging Now

FF7R Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura stated Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 is in development! The Final Fantasy VII Twitter account posted a series of tweets from significant individuals producing the game, including Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura, Director Naoki Hamaguchi, and President Yoshinori Kitase.
Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura said, “The development of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has been progressing rapidly since we adopted a new development structure. A title of this scale in which everything is interconnected even before production began is truly rare. In fact, some development has already begun on the third title. I myself have started on the development and am working towards the completion of the the series.”
The thread revealed several pieces of information about the multi-game Remake endeavor. The most immediate news concerned the official title and winter 2023 release for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Additionally, Tetsuya Nomura stated, “There are currently four Final Fantasy VII projects being developed in parallel.” Those four include Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3, a remake of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, and Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis.
So many Crises, so little time
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is an action role-playing game initially developed for the PSP. It served as a prequel to the 1997 Final Fantasy VII and Square is remaking it for Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC as Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion. The game’s protagonist is Zack Fair. Zack is a young member of SOLDIER searching for a missing SOLDIER named Genesis. The player follows the story from the Wutai war with Shinra to just before the start of Final Fantasy VII.
Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis is a mobile game in development for iOS and Android. Square will release it starting in 2022 in monthly episodes and retells the events from the original Final Fantasy VII, the movie Advent Children, and the games Before Crisis, Crisis Core, and Dirge of Cerberus. Firstly, players will select chapters from a timeline so they can jump between different times in the story. Secondly, the battle system is based on the original Active Time Battle system which was a less lazy turn-based system because the enemies didn’t wait for you to take your turn. Lastly, Ever Crisis will be free to play but will have loot boxes. And the loot boxes will offer random weapons and outfits.
We know how bad loot boxes can get, so I’m not a fan. But I’m not familiar with any egregious examples of loot boxes in Square Enix games. So I don’t have the same reaction here that I do with games like Diablo Immortal.
Is there a name for Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3
I would be impressed if we had a name for Final Fantasy Remake Part 3 because we just learned the name of Part 2. But thankfully we have two data points and a general theme to consider. Plus we have the internet.
So far we have Remake and Rebirth. Both titles start with R and represent the idea of recreation. Dom Peppiatt of VG247 put together a list of some likely titles. The two that stood out to me were Renewal and Resurrection because they continue the theme of recreation. But the third game is supposed to be the end of the trilogy, so I’m not sure if Renewal and Resurrection are a good fit. Resurrection might work if we look at the final game as completing the resurrection of Final Fantasy VII.
If we go to reddit, we have a breadth of guesses, some comical and some that genuinely make sense.
From an emotional angle, the one that hooked me is Final Fantasy VII Remembrance. It doesn’t exactly continue the theme of recreation, but it nails the “this is over” feeling in my mind. Resolve is also a good one when considering the end of the series. Plus, as u/eat_midgets (great name, I can’t pretend I didn’t just type “eat_midgets”) pointed out, it implies we are resolving the story as well as noting the resolve of the characters to achieve victory in the face of overwhelming odds.
And how can we ignore Final Fantasy VII Reverse Mortgage and Final Fantasy VII Resident Evil? Clear winners in my book.
Final Thoughts on Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3
This is an exciting time to be a Final Fantasy fan. We have plenty of games to get lost in and get excited about, including the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI that we just got a release date for.
Final Fantasy VII on PS1 was my introduction to the RPG genre. I still remember going to Blockbuster and renting a PlayStation and Final Fantasy VII. I had no memory card so I just played Final Fantasy for a weekend straight to see how far I could get. Everything about the game captured my heart. RPGs became my favorite genre of video games because of that game.
And now TTRPGs like Dungeons and Dragons are a central part of my life. There is something magical about inhabiting a different world with fantastic heroes, villains, and monsters, and experiencing stories that can only be told through our imaginations. But fortunately, we live in an age where we can take an imaginary story and turn it into a playable experience enjoyed and cherished by humans around the world.
What’s your best guess for the title of the third installment? How do you feel about the naming convention we have so far? Am I dumb? Let me know in the comments below!
