An Epic Return Of The Dragonlance World

Wizards of the Coast LLC closed out the Wizards Presents stream with a bang by unveiling the latest Dungeons & Dragons 5E adventure Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen. Dragonlance will hit shops on December 6th but Wizards of the Coast gave a sneak peek at some of the details and artwork for this highly anticipated Adventure. A new bundle system will include the 224-page book and the D&D Beyond version as well. This is the first time a 5E book will be bundled with digital content and is a HUGE selling point for many Dungeons & Dragons players.

The Dungeons & Dragons 5E adventure Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen is an original story set during the beginning of the War of the Lance. This will encompass the time central to the original Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy. The Dragonlance Chronicles began in 1984’s Dragons of Autumn Twilight and continued over the decades with almost 200 books and game material for the Dungeons & Dragons Universe.

The World’s Greatest Role-Playing Game Becomes Greater

The official Dungeons & Dragons products page describes Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen as a tale of conflict and defiance. It is set during the legendary War of the Lance and paints a picture of a time of War. Taking place in the classic Dragonlance setting, Takhisis the Dragon Queen has returned to the world of Krynn. Across the land, her armies of fanatical draconians wage a brutal war of conquest. The Dragon Armies march on the nation of Solamnia, and only the city of Kalaman stand in their way. But the Dragon Armies want more than just to crush their foes. An ancient evil in the Dragon Queen’s service seeks a magical weapon that could dominate Krynn for all time.

Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen is a tale of conflict and defiance set during the legendary War of the Lance. Create characters from Krynn, the world of the Dragonlance setting, then march them to the front lines of the battle against the terrifying Dragon Armies. The description alone sets the stage for an all-new and all-different approach to what 5e has been since it was introduced in 2014. In essence, the Role Playing aspect is giving a nod to the early Wargames that inspired Dungeons & Dragons in 1974.

The adventure Releases on December 6th, 2022, and will be available in TWO different bundles. Shadow of the Dragon Queen Book Bundle Includes the Physical Adventure Book and as a Digital Book early access on the D&D Beyond website. Shadow of the Dragon Queen Deluxe Edition Bundle Includes the Physical Book, DM Screen, Warriors of Krynn Board Game, and a Digital Book early access on the D&D Beyond site. As you can see, there is a component of combining the board game with the Adventure Book in a way that hasn’t been tackled before in Dungeons & Dragons. By using the Dragonlance: Warriors of Krynn board game you enhance the adventure’s massive battles in your Dungeons & Dragons game.

Battle for the World of Dragonlance! A World at War! Here are some of the features that make the board game/adventure guide combo one of the most ambitious and consequential moves so far in Dungeons & Dragons 5e:

  • World at War: Introduces a war game experience to D&D 5th edition, featuring heroes who participate in large-scale military battles
  • Dragonlance: Introduces the Dragonlance setting with a focus on the War of the Lance and an overview of what players and DMs need to run adventures during this world-spanning conflict that takes place across many years.
  • Heroes of War: Provides character creation rules highlighting core elements of the Dragonlance setting, including the Kender race and new backgrounds for the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery magic-users. Also introduces the Lunar Sorcery sorcerer subclass with new spells that bind your character to Krynn’s three mystical moons and imbue you with lunar magic.
  • Villains: Pits heroes against the infamous death knight Lord Soth and his army of draconians.
  • Provides a complete stand-alone co-operative battle game experience in the world of Dragonlance
  • Demonstrates options for integrating play with six Shadow of the Dragon Queen encounters by providing scenarios with win/loss outcomes that impact the roleplaying game experience, resulting in different encounter and quest choices for players
  • Designed by Rob Daviau and Stephen Baker

Board Games, Core Rules – A Dungeon Masters Dream Come True

The lead designer of Dragonlance Shadow of the Dragon Queen, F. Wes Schneider, described Dragonlance’s broad scale and intense battles as a different beast compared to past 5E adventures. The large-scale possibilities of the Dragonlance period are on full display in the promotional material.

There is a purposeful War driven inspiration to the scenario. Principal art director, Kate Irwin, shares that Dragonlance pulls inspiration from the films Saving Private Ryan and 1917. The grandeur and epic feel extend into the interior page artwork as well. Each Chapter features double-page artwork in the headings to capture the large-scale feel. Dragonlance is without a doubt one of the most ambitious entries in the Dungeons & Dragons 5e library. Prepare your armies Adventurers because the Age of Dragonlance is upon us!
