Do you need to watch Critical Role to watch The Legend of Vox Machina Animated Series? The first three episodes of “The Legend of Vox Machina” are now available on Amazon Prime but do you need to watch the Dungeons and Dragons stream to understand the animated series? There has been a lot of anticipation for this shows release, ever sense Critical Roles successful Kickstarter. Due to the crowd funding platform, Critical Role raised nearly 12 million dollars, with over 88,000 backers to bring this story to life.
So who is Critical Role?
So who is Critical Role? Well, they’re a bunch of “nerdy ass voice actors”, who started streaming their Dungeons and Dragons campaign on YouTube & Twitch. Managing to amass a following of millions of “critters” (what they call their fanbase), catapulting their fame into an animated series on Amazon Prime by funding a successful Kickstarter.
What the heck is Vox Machina?
So what the heck is Vox Machina, you might be asking yourself? To fully understand that you would need to know just a little bit about Dungeons & Dragons. Dungeons & Dragons is a table top role playing game where a group of players sit around a table role playing a character/adventurer as they navigate a fantasy world created by a Dungeon Master. A campaign, on average, is broken down into 4 hour sessions and can last years. I’ve personally been apart of a few campaigns that have spanned 3 plus years and counting.
The group of players from Critical Role in this instance, named their adventuring party, “Vox Machina”. The show is based off of a story arc from their campaign they created together around a table, rolling dice, improvising role play and playing Dungeons and Dragons. If you ask me, it is amazing to see this come to life. Collaborative story telling at its finest.
Also something to note, the cast members from Critical Role created their own characters for the Dungeons and Dragons campaign. The fact that they’re all voice actors and actresses lends perfectly for the show, allowing them to breathe life into their own characters via this animated series.
Do I need to watch Critical Role to enjoy Vox Machina?
So the question that everyone who hasn’t watched the D&D stream wants to know, will I be lost watching Vox Machina? The good news about the show Vox Machina, you can go in knowing nothing about the Dungeons and Dragons campaign from the Critical Role stream. Vox Machina is a fantastic fantasy story for adults (R rated) to watch and get lost in.
The art style by Titmouse animation is fantastic and perfect for this series. The first three episodes are streaming now on Amazon Prime, with new episodes dropping every Friday. If you are a fan of fantasy with a modernized edge this is for you.
Overall I would highly suggest giving it a try and if you fall in love with the characters perhaps check out Critical Roles Dungeon & Dragons stream on Twitch or YouTube. Also I’m a firm believer that everyone should try to play D&D at least once in their life.
